I’M STILL DOING MY LAP.
Those of you who’ve done 24 hour races will recognize this thing. The sawed-off segment of a dowel is the life of a team.
It’s the baton. As in the baton.
It’s to be passed from one teammate to the next in the transition tent. It’s to be protected with your life.
As a soloist, I got mine and promptly tucked it into my ever-present-in-my-jersey-pocket Ziploc bag of supplies that I bring on every ride. Not having to pass it on to anyone, I promptly forgot about it.
I recently discovered it, then tucked it back in there and hopefully it’ll never come out. It’s like, if I never pass it on, my time out there will never have to end.
I’m not ready to take it out.
I’m not ready to pass the baton.
