HAPPY BIRTHDAY, KID.
Someone gets a bike for their birthday and the reaction is the same no matter what their age.
They light up. Hit with a charge of adrenaline. Neurons firing with all the possibilities. They act like a little kid getting that birthday bike.
Case-in-point, our man Rhys.
His wife, Naomi, gave him the above framed photo for his big day (Boxing Day, by the way). He knew just what it meant. It meant that new Niner all-aluminum One 9 he’s been staring at online for the past few months will soon be his. It meant he no longer has to chat her up with all the details about the new frame weight and how much it will help his riding.
And it meant he got to go to Topanga Creek Bicycles to finally do more than just chat and sneak a piece of banana bread. He got to pick out all the parts and bits and bobs, each of which has been individually obsessed and dreamed about. Neurons firing with all the possibilities.
In about 2 – 3 weeks he’ll get to experience the next amazing stage of new bike age-reduction. See, every new bike takes about 10 years off your life. That’s the way it feels for the first few rides, anyway.
But that moment…on your birthday…when you get it? It feels like it takes about 35 years off your life.
Feels like being a little kid again.
Happy Birthday, little man.
