18 Miles Per Hour

18 MilesPerHour is about riding through the world instead of just passing it by.
TRY TO NOT TALK ABOUT YOUR BIKE
Or how awesomely you just rode.
Or how many miles you’ve put up this season.
Or whatever.
Good luck, it’s hard.
The ego is powerful.
And when surrounded by other cyclists the ego can go into defense mode.
We’re not perfect. This is a note to ourselves as much as anything. We’re human and sometimes we get caught up in the swirl. But it’s a nice, interesting exercise to try not to.
Now, there are times when it’s okay to talk about these things. Sharing a good route with someone. Helping someone who asks your opinion on a bike or a ride. Positive ways to discuss rides, races, events, bikes and the like.
But there’s the other way. And yeah, the line is pretty clear between them. And yeah, we fall prey to it from time to time.
So here’s the challenge: When you hear other people talking about what kind of bikes they have, or how many they have, or how many years they raced, or how far they rode today…don’t say a word. Listen. Encourage them.
For a cyclist, it can be agonizing. So many of us want to join the ego fest. Try to alpha male/female each other.
Try not doing that. Just once. Then try it again. Strengthen that muscle.

I pretty sure I could apply this in most areas of my life.
