18 Miles Per Hour

18 MilesPerHour is about riding through the world instead of just passing it by.

About 18mph

WHAT DOES 18MPH MEAN?

18 miles per hour is the sweet spot on a bike. A place where speed, calmness and observation all live together. Don’t take our word for it, listen to the smarty-pants scientists who hypothesized that 18 miles per hour is the ideal pace for seeing and absorbing the world around you – and that’s what we’re all about. Sometimes on a race course. Sometimes just out on a road or trail all by ourselves. We’re out there picking up all kinds of wisdom, insights ideas for new products and actual objects that we find out on the road. Then we put it all here.

OUR MISSION.

All we want to do is celebrate and encourage the beauty of cycling. The many cycling “truths” or those idiosyncratic experiences that all cyclists share. The feeling of getting on a bicycle and going through the world. The freedom it gave you as a little kid, the fantastic nervousness you felt the first time you gathered at the start line, the feeling of finally cleaning that one trail and any of the thousands of other feelings that a bicycle gives you. If any of this makes sense to you, then please stick around and share the ride with us.

SO WHAT’S ON THE SITE?

Everything we find out there. From cycling wisdom, to insights, to all the actual, tangible stuff we come across out there. Some of this stuff ends up in the store in various forms.

WHO ARE YOU GUYS?

Rhys Newman is a renowned product designer and lifetime cyclist. When he’s not doing that, he’s racing his singlespeed 29er. He’s been up on the podium at such events as the 24 Hours Of Adrenalin more times than he can count. And he can count pretty high. He’s also Welsh. That means Mother Nature can throw her worst stuff at him out there on the trail and he’ll just shrug it off. Maybe even call her a pussy and punch her in the neck. Then ask her if she wants to go grab a pint. Oh yes, if you like the inspired illustrations you see on our site, you can thank Rhys and his ever-present pen and sketchbook.

Brian Miller is an award-winning advertising creative director and non-award winning cyclist. When Brian is not creating campaigns that make you feel you need something you don’t, he’s out riding his cherished Indy Fab Crown Jewel on the roads or he’s suffering on the trails. He’s not much of a racer, but he’s a mind-scrambling lover. I mean, you should see him go. Whoo-wee. Good stuff. Top-drawer lovemaking. Did I also mention that he does all the writing on this site? No? He does.

Together they offer a view of the cycling world from both the competitive cyclist and the casual (but obsessed) one.

WHERE DO YOU GUYS LIVE AND RIDE?

The beautiful Topanga State Park area of Southern California. Not a day goes by without us feeling lucky to have so many amazing trails and roads right outside our back doors.

SO WHAT IF I LIKE TO GO FASTER THAN 18mph?

Good God, you ask a lot of questions. Listen, nothing about this site is proscriptive, except the idea that you should ride your bike more. And while you’re doing it, enjoy the world around you. That’s it.

SOUNDS GOOD…SO…CAN YOU LOAN ME 50 BUCKS?

No.
